Emily Angell

My name is Emily Angell and I am a second-year PA student at CU Anschutz. Prior to PA school, I studied Neuroscience and Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame and worked at the Notre Dame Memory Lab in the Psychology department. After completing my first year of PA school, I have recently joined the Emotion and Development Lab at CU Anschutz to assist with their COVID-19 impact study. I am in the Pediatric Critical and Acute Care track at Anschutz and hope to continue working with inpatient pediatric populations after I graduate.

Liz Tavares

I am a first-year PA student at the University of Quinnipiac in North Haven, CT. I have over five years of research experience and I am passionate about pursuing research throughout my career. I worked in the Neurobiology of Stress and Addiction Lab at the University of Massachusetts under the direction of Dr. Heather N. Richardson. Much of my research focused on the effects of alcohol binge drinking on developing neurons within the Prefrontal Cortex of adolescent rats. Specifically, I examined how binge drinking during early adolescence affects myelination of critical fibers within the portions of the brain responsible for executive functioning and inhibition.  As the former manager and technician of the Richardson Lab, I also trained and mentored several undergraduate students; mentorship is another important role I wish to prioritize in my career. Beyond the several years of experience I have in bench science and pre-clinical studies, I have recently been exposed to research in the public health domain. Last summer, I completed a fellowship at the Children's Hospital in Hartford Connecticut with the Injury and Violence Prevention Center under the guidance of Garry Lapidus, PA-C, MPH. Inspired by this incredible opportunity, I intend to achieve a master's degree in Public Health after finishing the PA program at Quinnipiac. While I am focused at the moment on completing the didactic portion of my studies, I am eagerly and actively looking for research opportunities to pursue. I am especially interested in studying communications between the gut microbiome and the brain with special emphasis on the implications these connections have in addiction behaviors. I am so encouraged to find organizations which support PAs working in research, which is why I am proud to be partnering with PAs in Research to promote student involvement and to help my peers pursue their own research goals by helping to connect students with ongoing opportunities. I am also excited to learn more about this organization's goals and initiatives so that we, as students, can help to promote those efforts.
